The Best Area to Stay in Malta

The Best Area to Stay in Malta by por itinerarioWeb

It is one of the smallest countries in the world and it lies to the south of Sicily. Despite the Italian influence, they speak English and drive like the British. Malta stands out for its 250km of beaches, but its capital La Valetta, together with some other millenary cities and spectacular landscapes, make this small archipelago a great experience.

La Valetta, and specially its Calle República, are the nerve center of the country. An atmosphere that makes you lose the notion of time surrounds the Catedral de San Juan, with its interior paintings of Caravaggio, and the Casa Rocca Piccola, with all its narrow and steep streets that, somehow, will end up leading you to the walls of the Fuerte de San Ángel — a fort by the sea —, or the Barrakka Gardens. From here, the highest point of the city, you can see the Tres Ciudades, which are actually the walled villages of Copiscua, Senglea and Vittoriosa, well-known by their authenticity and peacefulness.

La Valetta is the best area to stay in Malta due to its great cultural and services offer, being a starting point for visiting cities like Mdina. Once crossed the Mdina Gate, accessing the interior of the walled city with all its palaces seems to be going back in time. The Convento de los Dominicanos and the Palazzo Falzon give a good account of it. Its neighboring town Rabat, is known by the Catacumbas de Santa Ágata and by the Gruta de San Pablo, with several sailors’ legends behind.

Once you have visited the villages, it is time to go to the beach. Its 250km of fine sand washed by crystalline waters are known throughout Europe. The beaches of Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha stand out due to their beauty. Also note the bay of Santa Marija, located on the spectacular Isla de Comino, a territory of 3.5km2 of total disconnection.

The remaining island of the Maltese archipelago is Gozo which is reached by ferry from Cirkewwa. Its capital Victoria and the square It-Tokk, always with an excellent atmosphere, are ideal to taste the specialty of the house, the pastizzi. The Acantilados de of Djerwa, with the so-called Ventana Azul that form with the sea and the red sand beach of Ramla, are some of its best attractions.

Hipogeno Hal Saflieni’s underground temple, and the villages of Marsazlokk, Sliema or St. Julian’s, known for their nightlife, are also worth a visit in your Maltese experience. After having visited the island, one realizes why everyone has wanted to conquer it throughout history!
